Ram Mandir: History and Timeline


Ram mandir and Babri Masjid dispute

Lord Rama belongs to the Surya Vansha who set up the city of Ayodhya. Upon realizing that his incarnation's mission had been accomplished Ram took a Jal Samadhi. Ayodha became deserted but it was re-established by his son Kush who ruled Kaushambi (as stated in Raghuvamsa by Kalidas). He was the one who built a temple at the birth location of Rama.


The aftermath of Mahabharat led to another phase of desolation, the process of dissertation and rejuvenation took place multiple times. 


King Vikramaditya is known to have constructed 360 temples along the Lakshman Ghat on river Sarju and built a magnificent temple. The city was later the capital of the Gupta dynasty. 


It was also known as Saket amongst Buddhists with 20 temples and 3000+ monks living in the vicinity. During this period it became a trade center and gained international fame.


1st augmentation to the structure: King Jaichand of Kannauj changed the name encrypted on the walls to his own for the credit of constructing the temple. [pss pss he’s the one who ditched Prithviraj, sus guy]


1528: The Saga Begins

Mughal ruler Babur ordered General Mir Baqi to construct a mosque after razing a temple at ‘Ram’s birthplace’ in Ayodhya’s Ramkot as per the Babarnama. 


During Akhbar and Jahangir a small scaffold was allowed but with Aurangzeb in the picture, a mosque was built in the area.


Following is a comprehensive timeline of the events that followed leading us to 2024!


1853: 1st Recorded Religious Violence 

A Hindu sect, during the rule of Nawab Wajid Shah of Awadh, claimed that the Hindu temple had been destroyed during the rule of Mughal ruler Babur.


1859: British build fencing and grant worshipping permissions

A fence separated the Mosque for the Muslims and the outer court for Hindus to assuage communal tensions.


1885: Court Petition

Mahant Raghubir Das petitioned the Faizabad district court for permission to construct a canopy on the Ramchabutra outside the mosque which was denied.


1949: Idols Surface

idols of Ram Lalla were found inside Babri Masjid said to have magically surfaced at the place, leading to civil suits by both parties. 

The premises were proclaimed as a disputed area and govt locked the gates.


1961: Property Rights

Sunni Central Waqf Board filed a suit in Faizabad civil court, declaring Babri Mosque as the property of the board. 


1980

  • Janasangha and a wing of Janta party together form BJP Presided by Atal Bihari Bajpai

  • The Mandal Commission was set up and headed by B. P. Mandal


1984: Voices get organized

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) spearheads a movement to ‘liberate’ the birthplace of Lord Ram soon taken over by Lal Krishna Advani


1986: Gates Open

Ayodhya District Judge orders the gates of the disputed mosque to be opened to allow Hindus to worship


1989: Foundation laid and High Court takes charge

The VHP lays the foundations of a Ram temple on land adjacent to the disputed mosque. Pending suits under the Faizabad district court were transferred to a special committee under the high court, and a demand to relocate the mosque was made.


  • Election: Bharatiya Janata Party and a Left Front led by CPI (M). V. P. Singh as PM


1990: “mandir wahi banaenge”

The BJP, led by then-President LK Advani, ordered a nationwide Rath Yatra from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Bursting communal riots on its way it culminates in VHP volunteers partially damaging the mosque.


Then UP CM Mulayam Singh tried stopping the Rath Yatra from entering Ayodhya. Public transport was halted but people reached by swimming across Sariyu or going by private vehicles by road. The CM ordered open firing on the supporters.


  • The Mandal Commission recommendations were applied by VP Singh with the motive to gain majority votes in the 91 elections.


1991: Re-elections

  • BJP wins in Uttar Pradesh.

  • Indian economic crisis: LPG policy applied under Narasimha Rao as PM


1992 - masjid demolition 

Babri mosque was torn down by VHP supporters, the Shiv Sena party, and the BJP, which resulted in riots leading to 2,000 deaths including the infamous Mumbai blasts


1998: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

The BJP forms a coalition government and Kalyan Singh as CM in UP.


2002: Godhra

The BJP's election manifesto for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections excludes a commitment to build a temple. VHP confirms March 15 as the construction start date. Hundreds of volunteers arrive at the location. At least 58 people are killed in an attack on a train in Godhra carrying Hindu activists returning from Ayodhya.


2003: ASI finds evidence

Archaeologists conduct a court-ordered survey and find evidence supporting the existence of a temple beneath the mosque.


2010: Title dispute

The Allahabad High Court ordered that the 2.77-acre disputed site be divided into three parts among the Hindus, the Muslims, and the Nirmohi Akhara. A petition was also filed on Ram Lalla's behalf to challenge the High Court decision.

2019: Clearing of title

a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court ordered the disputed land to be handed over to a trust to build the Ram Janmabhoomi temple. The court also directed the government to give the Sunni Waqf Board five acres of land in another location to build a mosque.


2020: foundation stone

The foundation stone for the construction of the Ram Temple was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 


January 2024: Preparations are in full swing for the Ayodhya Ram temple 'Pran Patishtha' ceremony on January 22. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Ram temple in Ayodhya and will also be the chief guest of the event.
